Robert Gould Shaw Memorial
Beacon Street at the Boston Common
This work always gets a lot attention from onlookers. The tragic story of Shaw and his black soldiers is well known and was dramatized in the movie "Glory." The sculptor is August Saint-Gaudens and dates to 1897. Shaw actually lived on Beacon Street, a short distance from where the monument is placed and he and his troops marched down Beacon Street, in front of his family, on their way to the war.
